Student Activity Clubs
The Garces community has many different interests and hobbies.
The Next Generation (AD:TNG) AcaDec is a an academic competition that pits students against others of similar GPA levels. It is internationally recognized and has a unique focus each year. Students compete for individual rankings as well as team rankings. The U.S. Academic Decathlon website says it quite well: “It’s not about demonstrating how good a student you already are. It’s about daring to push your limits, to master college-level material and to practice skills, like public speaking, that might be wholly new to you. It’s about the people you’ll meet along the way—the coaches who will mentor you, the competitors who will challenge you, and the teammates who will become your lifelong friends.”

The purpose of the Garces Book Club is to encourage recreational reading and discussion among Garces students.
Garces Gavel Club
The Garces Gavel Club is the place to be if you want to develop, improve, and practice your public speaking and leadership skills. Every meeting allows participants to speak impromptu on various topics, deliver prepared speeches taken from Toastmasters manuals, evaluate prepared speeches, and facilitate the meeting. Talking time, proper use of the English language, and use of filler words are noted. With practice, participants can rid their language of those ubiquitous but unwanted and unnecessary “um”, “uh“, “so”, and “like.” Also, they get to be confident and eloquent speakers, and skilled listeners. Indeed the Gavel Club can help students acquire skills to be a great leader. Time commitment is 2 hours per month with meetings held after school every other Friday. The first meeting in SY 2015-2016 will be on September 18, 2015 at 2:40 pm in Mr. Geissel’s classroom. Please contact the parent mentor, Malou Guerrero-Lee, at email@example.com for more information.

Garces Memorial’s Right to Life Club
Dear Life, focuses on taking a pro-life stance. Pro-life encompasses the whole of life, in every stage and at every age. Throughout the year, the club will handpick projects such as Operation Gratitude, service at the Homeless Center, Operation Christmas Child, and the Kern County Right to Life Fish Fry to further our purpose. These projects are both something we strongly believe in, but also find that they promote each stage of life as a gift and something to be treasured. While promoting service to others, the members will also find the reward of respecting and appreciating life as a whole. We plan to equip leaders to stand up for life, to speak out, and to serve.

This club will allow students to calm down and have a greater state of mind in order to achieve their goals. Meditation would incorporate what students learn in junior theology into their personal lives and give students the opportunity to become more spiritual through discovery of themselves and their faith.
