Mathematics - Policies and Procedures
Graduation Requirement
All Students who graduate from Garces Memorial High School must successfully complete 3 years of college recognized courses with a minimum of Algebra 2 (P). A 4th year is recommended.
Math Placement for Incoming Freshmen
The student will be placed in one of the following math courses:
Pre-Algebra
The student scores below a 60% on the math portion of the placement exam, or takes Garces Math in summer school and is placed in Pre-Algebra based on grade and recommendation of the instructor.
Algebra 1(P)
Scores between 60 – 90 % on the placement exam, or takes Introduction to Algebra 1 in summer school and based on the grade and recommendation of the instructor is placed in Algebra 1(CP), or Scores below a 60% on the Algebra Challenge Exam in May.
Algebra 1(H)
Scores at least a 90% on the placement exam, or scores between an 60 – 75% on the Algebra Challenge Exam in May, or takes Accelerated Algebra 1 in summer school and scores a 60 – 75% on the Algebra Challenge Exam which is given on the last day of summer school.
Geometry (P)
Scores an 75 – 90% on the Algebra Challenge Exam in May, or takes Accelerated Algebra 1 in summer school and scores an 75 – 90% on the Algebra Challenge Exam which is given on the last day of summer school.
Geometry (H)
Scores at least a 90% on the Algebra Challenge Exam in May, or takes Accelerated Algebra 1 in summer school and scores at least a 90% on the Algebra Challenge Exam which is given on the last day of summer school.
Algebra 1(Honors)
Qualifications: Based on the math section of the entrance exam, the student will be placed in Algebra 1 (Honors). If the student is not placed in the honors course, then they may take the Algebra 1(1st Semester) course during the summer. The student will be placed in the Algebra 1 (Honors) if they receive at least a 90% in the summer school course and receive a recommendation from the summer school teacher.
Geometry (Honors)
PRE-REQUISITES FOR ENROLLMENT:
Honors Geometry is a one-year course offered to those students who have met the following requirements:
1. Complete Algebra I (P) with a second semester grade of A or complete Algebra I (H) with a second semenster grade of B or better.
2. Have a freshman second semester GPA of 3.33 or above.
3. Are recommended by the Algebra I instructor as having demonstrated an appropriate work ethic, motivation, class participation, and classroom behavior.
Algebra 2 (Honors)
Qualifications: The student must fill out the honors application with the math department chair. The student must have received a minimum grade of 80% in both semesters of Geometry (H) and receive the recommendation from the Geometry (H) instructor. If a student was in Geometry(CP), then they must have maintained a minimum of 90% for both semesters of Geometry and receive the recommendation from the Geometry(CP) instructor.
Math Analysis (Honors)
Qualifications: The student must fill out the honors applications with the math department chair. The student must have received a minimum grade of 80% in both semesters of Algebra 2 (H) and receive the recommendation from the Algebra 2 (H) instructor. If a student was in Algebra 2 (CP), then they must have maintained a minimum of 90% for both semesters of Algebra 2 and receive the recommendation from the Algebra 2 (CP) instructor.
AP Calculus
Qualifications: The student must fill out an honors application with the math department chair. The student must have received at least an 80% in Math Analysis (Honors), and receive the recommendation from the Math Analysis (H) instructor.
